Band-8 model answer
The sport I most enjoy watching is cricket, and specifically Test cricket, which is the longest, slowest, most drawn-out format of the game — up to five days for a single match. That probably sounds like a strange thing to be enthusiastic about, but for me it's precisely what makes it so watchable. I usually catch it at home, either on a proper television when I can, or as a live stream on my phone when I'm on the move. During a big series I'll be watching almost every day, at least in the background while I'm doing other things. My father is really who got me into it — he's followed the sport his entire life, and some of my earliest memories are sitting on the sofa next to him during weekend matches. Even now, when there's a big game on, we tend to text each other running commentary from wherever we are. The reason I love it is that Test cricket rewards patience in a way most modern entertainment doesn't. You watch a batsman quietly build an innings over hours, or a bowler set a trap over multiple deliveries, and when it finally pays off it's genuinely thrilling. In a strange way, I think it's the sport that comes closest to feeling like a good novel unfolding in real time.
Why this answer scores band 8
- ✓Defends an unusual choice with a strong reason ('rewards patience in a way most modern entertainment doesn't')
- ✓Small anecdotal detail (texting commentary with father) that answers the 'who with' bullet naturally
- ✓Sophisticated metaphor at the end ('like a good novel unfolding in real time')
