Writing Task 2

IELTS Writing Task 2: Advantages and Disadvantages Essays

This lesson tests whether you can present a balanced discussion of benefits and drawbacks, and, when asked, give a clear reasoned opinion on which side is stronger.

What this question looks like

This Task 2 essay type gives you a statement about a trend or practice and asks you to discuss its advantages and disadvantages, sometimes with an extra instruction asking whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. You write one essay of at least 250 words in 40 minutes, structured as introduction, two body paragraphs (one per side) and a conclusion.

Step-by-step approach

  1. 1Read the question carefully to see which of the two versions you have: 'discuss advantages and disadvantages' (neutral, no opinion needed) or 'do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?' (you must give a clear opinion on balance). This decides your thesis statement and conclusion.
  2. 2Brainstorm two or three advantages and two or three disadvantages, then pick your two strongest of each, one you can explain fully beats three you can only mention in a phrase.
  3. 3Plan a four-paragraph structure: introduction with paraphrase and thesis, one body paragraph for advantages, one body paragraph for disadvantages, conclusion. Each body paragraph needs a topic sentence, explanation and a specific example.
  4. 4Write topic sentences that state one clear advantage or disadvantage, then use 'this means that' or 'as a result' to explain the mechanism, then give a concrete example (a person, a country, a situation) rather than another generalisation.
  5. 5If the question asks whether advantages outweigh disadvantages, make sure your body paragraphs are not equally balanced in language, use stronger phrases in the side you favour ('the most significant benefit', 'a relatively minor drawback') so your opinion is visible throughout, not just in the conclusion.
  6. 6In the conclusion, summarise both sides in one sentence and then answer the question directly: state your view on balance (or confirm you have discussed both fairly if no opinion was asked), never introduce a new point here.

Worked example

Question

Many people now choose to work from home rather than commute to an office. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

Answer

Introduction: paraphrase the trend of remote work, then thesis: 'While remote work has some clear drawbacks, this essay argues that its benefits outweigh its costs for most employees.' Body 1 (advantages): saved commuting time allows more hours for family, exercise or sleep, example of a worker in a large city saving two hours daily, this directly improves wellbeing and job satisfaction. Body 2 (disadvantages): however, working alone can lead to isolation and difficulty separating work from personal time, example of employees checking email late at night, though this can be managed with clear routines and occasional office visits. Conclusion: 'Although remote work can isolate employees if boundaries are not maintained, the time, cost and flexibility benefits are substantial enough that, on balance, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.'

Why

This is the 'outweigh' version, so a clear opinion is required, not just a balanced discussion. First identify the strongest advantage (time and money saved on commuting, leading to better work-life balance) and the strongest disadvantage (isolation and blurred boundaries between work and home life, which can hurt long-term productivity and mental health). Decide a position, here that advantages outweigh disadvantages for most workers, then plan paragraphs so the advantage paragraph is slightly more developed and uses stronger evaluative language, while the disadvantage paragraph acknowledges the drawback honestly but frames it as manageable. The conclusion must state the balance explicitly, not just summarise.

Try it yourself

Write a full essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. Give one clear advantage and one clear disadvantage, each explained with a specific example, and finish with a direct answer to the question.

Common mistakes

  • !Writing 'discuss both views' style paragraphs (agree/disagree) instead of true advantages and disadvantages, this is a different task and loses marks for Task Response.
  • !Giving a shopping list of four or five advantages with no explanation or example, breadth without depth scores lower than two well-developed points.
  • !Forgetting to answer 'do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages' directly, many candidates describe both sides fairly then never state which is bigger, this loses Task Response marks even with good English.
  • !Making the two body paragraphs feel like separate essays with no connection, strong essays use linking words like 'however' or 'despite this' to transition between the advantage and disadvantage sections.
  • !Padding the introduction with generic claims like 'this is a controversial topic in modern society' instead of a clear paraphrase of the actual question.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Advantages and Disadvantages Essays — FAQ

Do I always need to give my own opinion in an advantages and disadvantages essay?

Only if the question specifically asks something like 'do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?' If the instruction is simply 'discuss the advantages and disadvantages', a balanced discussion without a forced final verdict is perfectly acceptable and matches the task.

How many advantages and disadvantages should I include?

One well-explained advantage and one well-explained disadvantage per body paragraph is usually enough, sometimes two per paragraph if you can develop both briefly. Depth with a clear example beats a long list of underdeveloped points, which examiners mark down for weak Task Response.

Can I put the advantages and disadvantages in the same paragraph?

It is possible but riskier, since it is harder to keep the organisation clear and easy to follow. Using one paragraph for advantages and a separate one for disadvantages is the safer, clearer choice for Coherence and Cohesion, especially under 40-minute time pressure.
