IELTS Academic or General Training costs PKR 75,600 in most of Pakistan in 2026 and PKR 76,240 in Lahore and Faisalabad. The British Council's own Karachi venue listed PKR 64,250, the lowest price we found. Unlike India, where one provider charges one price everywhere, Pakistan has two official providers and the price depends on the venue you pick.
The British Council and IDP both deliver IELTS in Pakistan. It is the same test, marked the same way, with the same Test Report Form, so the only things that change between them are the price at a given venue, the cities they cover and the dates on offer. Most pages that rank for this question in October 2026 still quote 2024 or 2025 prices, which is why every figure below was read from the two providers' own pages rather than from another guide.
The test fee is only part of the cost. Moving a date inside two weeks, cancelling late, asking for a remark or sitting the test again all cost money, and those rules are spread across several official pages. They are collected here with the amounts worked out in rupees.
Where these figures come from: the IDP Pakistan fee table, the British Council's test dates and fees page and its live booking system, all read on 18 October 2026. Prices are revised from time to time and the booking page always shows the amount you will actually pay, so check it before you pay.
How much is the IELTS exam fee in Pakistan in 2026?
IELTS Academic and General Training on computer cost the same as each other: PKR 75,600 at most venues, PKR 76,240 in Lahore and Faisalabad, and PKR 64,250 at the British Council in Karachi. IELTS for UKVI costs PKR 78,820 with either provider, IELTS Life Skills PKR 53,000, and IDP's One Skill Retake PKR 48,050.
| Test | IDP | British Council |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General Training, on computer | PKR 75,600 (PKR 76,240 in Lahore and Faisalabad) | PKR 64,250 to PKR 76,240, by venue |
| IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training), on computer | PKR 78,820 | PKR 78,820 |
| IELTS Life Skills | PKR 53,000 | PKR 53,000 (B1) |
| IELTS One Skill Retake | PKR 48,050 (PKR 48,000 for UKVI) | Shown when you book |
Academic and General Training are priced the same, so choose between them on what your university, employer or visa route asks for, not on cost. If you are unsure which one you need, our guide to IELTS Academic vs General Training sets out who asks for which.
There is no separate registration or application fee on top of these amounts. What you pay when you book is the test fee. The British Council also gives its test takers free access to its IELTS Ready Premium preparation platform, which is worth knowing about if you are comparing the two providers.
Is the IELTS fee different in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad?
Yes. IDP charges PKR 75,600 in Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Gujrat and PKR 76,240 in Lahore and Faisalabad. At the British Council the price we found ranged from PKR 64,250 in Karachi to PKR 76,240 in Lahore, a difference of PKR 11,990.
| City | IDP | British Council |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi | PKR 75,600 | PKR 64,250 (British Council Library, Clifton) |
| Islamabad | PKR 75,600 | PKR 75,600 (Paradise Complex) |
| Rawalpindi | PKR 75,600 | No venue listed |
| Gujrat | PKR 75,600 | Venue listed, price not checked |
| Lahore | PKR 76,240 | PKR 76,240 (SKANS Babar Block) |
| Faisalabad | PKR 76,240 | Venue listed, price not checked |
The Karachi figure is the one to notice. On the same October dates, the British Council Library venue in Clifton listed PKR 64,250 while IDP listed PKR 75,600 for Karachi, which is PKR 11,350 more for the same test. If you live in or near Karachi and a British Council date suits you, that is the cheapest way we found to sit IELTS in Pakistan.
The British Council also runs the test in many cities that are not in IDP's fee table, including Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mirpur, Multan, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Quetta. We did not check a price for every one of them. The booking system shows the price for each venue and date before you pay, so compare two or three nearby venues before you commit.
British Council or IDP: which should you book?
Book whichever gives you the cheapest venue and a date that fits. The test, the marking and the certificate are the same with both, and universities and visa offices do not treat one provider's result differently from the other's.
Three things are worth comparing. First, the price at the venue you would actually use, which the city table above shows can differ by more than PKR 10,000. Second, the date: the British Council says IELTS on computer runs on more days of the week than the paper test did, and a date one provider cannot offer may be open at the other. Third, the rules after booking, which are almost identical but not quite, as the transfer and remark sections below show.
Results arrive quickly with either. The British Council says IELTS on computer results are usually available in one to two days. That speed matters if you are booking close to an application deadline, because it leaves time for a second attempt if the first falls short.
Can you take IELTS on paper in Pakistan?
Not as a normal booking. The British Council offers IELTS on paper in Pakistan only to candidates with special consideration approval on medical grounds, and IDP's Pakistan fee table lists only tests on computer.
This surprises people who remember the paper test, and it changes how you should prepare. On test day you will type your Writing answers, read passages on screen and move between Listening questions with a mouse. If you have only ever practised on paper, practise at least once on a screen under time pressure. Our guide to paper and computer IELTS explains what is different about the computer format, and the free full IELTS mock test runs all four sections on screen with the real timings.
Do you need IELTS for UKVI?
Only if a UK visa route asks for a Secure English Language Test. IELTS for UKVI costs PKR 78,820 in Pakistan, PKR 3,220 more than the standard test at most venues, and it is the same test taken under extra identity checks.
Many UK universities accept standard IELTS Academic for a degree course. Other visa routes, and some courses below degree level, require the UKVI version. Ask your university or check the British Council's UKVI page for Pakistan before you book. Booking UKVI when you did not need it costs you PKR 3,220; booking the standard test when you did need UKVI costs you a whole second fee.
What does it cost to change or cancel your IELTS date?
Nothing, if you act 15 or more days before the test: a transfer is free and a cancellation refunds 75%. From 5 to 14 days before, a transfer costs up to 25% of the fee and a cancellation refunds nothing. Under 5 days, you cannot transfer at all.
The British Council and IDP apply the same time limits to standard IELTS in Pakistan. In rupees, on a PKR 75,600 booking:
| When you ask | Transfer | Cancel |
|---|---|---|
| 15 days or more before the test | Free | 75% refunded: you get back PKR 56,700 and lose PKR 18,900 |
| 5 to 14 days before the test | Allowed, with an administrative fee of up to 25% (up to PKR 18,900) | No refund |
| Fewer than 5 days before the test | Not allowed: a request is treated as a cancellation | No refund |
The 15-day line is the one that matters. If there is any chance your plans will change, decide before that point, because the day after it the same change costs up to PKR 18,900. The full rules are on the British Council cancellation and refund policy and IDP's reschedule and cancel page. UKVI tests have their own policy.
Illness and emergencies are treated separately. Both providers accept applications for special consideration with evidence, and the British Council takes them up to two calendar days after a test you missed. IDP asks for a medical certificate within five days of the test date and then refunds the fee minus a local administrative cost. If you simply do not turn up, you lose the whole fee.
How much is an IELTS remark in Pakistan?
The British Council charges PKR 39,650 for an Enquiry on Results on IELTS on computer, PKR 41,000 for UKVI on computer and PKR 27,550 for Life Skills. The fee is refunded if your score goes up in any section.
A remark has to be requested within six weeks of the test date, and you choose which sections are looked at again. The British Council says the outcome normally arrives within the same day to 21 days. We could not find a public remark fee for IDP in Pakistan, so ask your IDP centre for the amount before you apply.
A remark is worth considering when one section, usually Writing or Speaking, came in half a band below what you expected and below what you need. It is a review of the marking of the test you already took, not a new attempt, so it cannot help a section where you simply ran out of time.
Is One Skill Retake cheaper than a full retest?
Yes. IDP's One Skill Retake costs PKR 48,050, which is PKR 27,550 less than a full test at PKR 75,600. It only makes sense when exactly one section is below your target.
One Skill Retake lets you sit Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking again without repeating the other three, and you get a new Test Report Form showing the new score alongside the originals. It is available after a test on computer at a centre that offers it. At IDP, cancelling a One Skill Retake 72 hours or more before the session gets a full refund, with no administrative fee.
Put the options side by side for a Writing score that is half a band short. A British Council remark costs PKR 39,650 and comes back if the band rises. A One Skill Retake costs PKR 48,050 and gives you a fresh attempt. A full retest costs PKR 75,600 and puts all four bands at risk again. If two or more sections are short, the full retest is the only one that fixes the problem. Check first that the institution you are applying to accepts a One Skill Retake result; our One Skill Retake guide covers the rules.
What do Pakistani candidates score on IELTS?
In the official 2024-2025 IELTS data, candidates from Pakistan averaged 6.4 overall on IELTS Academic and 5.8 on General Training. Writing was the lowest of the Academic averages, at 6.0.
| Test | Listening and Reading | Writing | Speaking | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Academic | 6.4 | 6.0 | 6.3 | 6.4 |
| General Training | 5.6 | 5.7 | 6.0 | 5.8 |
These are averages, so many candidates scored below them. The most common university requirement in our university IELTS requirements guide is 6.5 overall, just above the Academic average, and Writing is the section most likely to fall short. The figures come from the IELTS test taker performance data; we show Listening and Reading together because the published file appears to swap those two columns, which our average IELTS score by country page explains.
How to avoid paying the IELTS fee twice
The fee is large, but the expensive mistake is paying it a second time. Four habits prevent most of that:
- Know your level before you book. Take a timed mock under test conditions first. If it shows you are half a band short, a few more weeks of preparation is far cheaper than PKR 75,600 for a second sitting.
- Book at least 15 days out, and decide early. Inside 15 days, a change of plan costs up to PKR 18,900 and a cancellation refunds nothing.
- Compare venues, not just providers. In Karachi the British Council venue listed PKR 11,350 less than IDP for the same October dates.
- Work on Writing first if you take Academic. It is the lowest average for Pakistani Academic candidates. Our IELTS writing checker gives an instant word count and a paragraph, sentence and linking-word analysis of your essay.
If you are comparing costs across countries, our IELTS exam fee in India page covers India, where a single provider charges one price everywhere.
