IELTS Score for PR & Immigration 2026

For Canada Express Entry you need CLB 7 minimum — IELTS 6.0 in every skill — and CLB 9 (Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0) to earn strong CRS points. Australia asks 6.0 each for Competent English and 7.0 each for Proficient. The UK Skilled Worker route commonly needs only B1, around 4.0 in each skill.

Immigration requirements are stated per skill, not as an overall band, and that single detail catches more applicants out than anything else. An overall 7.0 built on a 6.0 in Writing does not meet a “7.0 in each” requirement. Every threshold below is a per-skill minimum unless it explicitly says otherwise.

Requirements change and vary by visa stream, province and occupation. Treat this as an orientation guide and confirm the current rule with the official immigration authority before you book a test.

What IELTS score do you need for PR?

Most skilled-migration routes cluster between IELTS 6.0 and 7.0 in each skill. Canada and Australia are the demanding ones because higher bands earn more points, not just eligibility. The UK Skilled Worker route is the least demanding of the four.

Table 1 — Typical IELTS requirements by immigration route. Per-skill minimums unless stated otherwise.
RouteTest acceptedTypical requirement
Canada — Express EntryIELTS General TrainingCLB 7 minimum (6.0 in every skill); CLB 9 for strong CRS points
Australia — skilled visasIELTS Academic or GeneralCompetent 6.0 each; Proficient 7.0 each; Superior 8.0 each
UK — Skilled WorkerIELTS for UKVI (SELT)CEFR B1 — commonly 4.0 in each skill
UK — Student (degree level)IELTS for UKVI (SELT)CEFR B2 — commonly 5.5 in each skill
New Zealand — Skilled MigrantIELTS General or AcademicCommonly 6.5 overall

What is CLB 9 in IELTS for Canada PR?

CLB 9 is Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0. Canada scores language in Canadian Language Benchmarks, not IELTS bands, so your four IELTS scores are converted separately — your CLB level is set by your weakest skill.

That last point is the one worth internalising. If three skills convert to CLB 9 and one lands at CLB 7, you are treated as CLB 7 for points. Improving your weakest skill is almost always worth more CRS points than pushing an already-strong skill higher.

Table 2 — Official CLB to IELTS General Training conversion used for Express Entry. Note that Listening always demands the highest band and Reading the lowest.
CLB levelListeningReadingWritingSpeakingWhat it means
CLB 108.58.07.57.5Maximum CRS language points
CLB 98.07.07.07.0The band most Express Entry guides aim for
CLB 87.56.56.56.5Solid CRS points, common realistic target
CLB 76.06.06.06.0Minimum for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility
CLB 65.55.05.55.5Below FSW minimum; some trades streams only
CLB 55.04.05.05.0Below FSW minimum
CLB 44.53.54.04.0Below FSW minimum

Notice the asymmetry: CLB 9 needs 8.0 in Listening but only 7.0 in Reading. Listening is the binding constraint for most Express Entry candidates, which makes it the highest-value section to drill. What IELTS score do you need for Australia PR?

Australia uses three named tiers. Competent English is 6.0 in each skill and is the eligibility floor for most skilled visas. Proficient English is 7.0 in each and earns extra points. Superior English is 8.0 in each and earns the maximum.

Table 3 — Australia’s English tiers for skilled migration. Each is a per-skill minimum.
TierIELTS requirementWhy it matters
Competent English6.0 in each skillEligibility threshold for most skilled visas
Proficient English7.0 in each skillAdditional points on the skilled migration test
Superior English8.0 in each skillMaximum English points

The jump from Competent to Proficient is a full band in every skill and is where most applicants stall. As with Canada, points are decided by your weakest section.

What about the UK and New Zealand?

The UK Skilled Worker visa commonly requires only CEFR B1, roughly 4.0 in each skill, and a degree-level Student visa about B2 or 5.5 each. Both must be taken as IELTS for UKVI at an approved SELT centre. New Zealand skilled migration commonly asks for 6.5 overall.

The UK detail that trips people up is not the band, it is the test type. A standard IELTS result is not accepted for a UK visa — it has to be IELTS for UKVI, booked as a Secure English Language Test. The exam content is the same; the booking route and the report form are different, and an ordinary IELTS booking cannot be converted afterwards.

Should you take Academic or General Training for PR?

For Canadian and UK immigration, General Training is the usual choice. Australia and New Zealand accept either for skilled migration. Take Academic only if a university or a professional registration body also needs it.

General Training is not an easier test, but its Reading section uses workplace and everyday texts instead of academic passages, and its Writing Task 1 is a letter rather than a data description. Note that General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band. The full comparison is in our Academic vs General Training guide, and the section-by-section breakdown is in the IELTS syllabus guide.

How realistic is CLB 9 in practice?

Harder than most guides imply. Across 855 scored practice attempts on this site, only 4.5% of Listening attempts reached band 8, the level CLB 9 requires, and no Speaking attempt reached band 7 at all. CLB 7 — 6.0 in each skill — is met by roughly a quarter of attempts.

Table 4 — Share of scored practice attempts on ieltsfreetests.com reaching each band, 29 July 2026. Empty and abandoned attempts are excluded. These are practice results from a free platform whose users skew towards early preparation, not official IELTS results.
SkillAttemptsAverage bandReached 6.0+ (CLB 7)Reached 7.0+

Reading1784.7727.5%11.2%
Writing2225.1124.8%13.5%
Speaking1164.379.5%0.0%

Two things follow. First, Speaking is the realistic blocker for CLB 9, not Listening — it had the lowest average of any skill and not one attempt in the sample reached the 7.0 that CLB 9 needs. It is also the least-practised section, with the fewest attempts.

Second, CLB 7 is a reasonable near-term target for most people: roughly a quarter of attempts already clear 6.0 in Listening, Reading and Writing. Speaking again lags at 9.5%. If you are planning a timeline, budget most of it for Speaking.

How do you close the gap to your target band?

Sit one full timed test to find your weakest skill, then spend most of your effort there — immigration points are set by your lowest section, so raising a 6.0 to a 7.0 is worth far more than moving a 7.5 to an 8.0.

  1. Establish a real baseline. Take a free full mock test under exam timing rather than estimating.
  2. Identify the binding skill. Convert each section with the CLB table above; your level is the weakest one.
  3. Practise Speaking out loud, early. On our data it is the weakest and least-practised section by a clear margin. Use the cue card library and Part 1 topic questions.
  4. Drill Listening for CLB 9. It needs 8.0, the highest band any Express Entry skill demands.
  5. Re-test every two weeks and track movement in your weakest section, not your overall band.

Every section can be practised free here with band scores and examiner-style feedback returned automatically — start with a free IELTS practice test or follow the structured Learn IELTS course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Canada Express Entry requires CLB 7 as a minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker programme, which is IELTS 6.0 in each of the four skills. CLB 9 — Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 — earns substantially more CRS points. Your CLB level is set by your weakest skill, not by your overall band.

CLB 9 corresponds to IELTS General Training scores of 8.0 in Listening, 7.0 in Reading, 7.0 in Writing and 7.0 in Speaking. Note the asymmetry: Listening demands a full band higher than the other three, which makes it the section most Express Entry candidates need to work hardest on.

Australia uses three tiers. Competent English is 6.0 in each skill and is the eligibility floor for most skilled visas. Proficient English is 7.0 in each and earns additional points on the skilled migration points test. Superior English is 8.0 in each and earns the maximum English points available.

General Training is the usual choice for Canadian and UK immigration. Australia and New Zealand accept either for skilled migration. Take Academic only if a university or professional registration body separately requires it. General Training Reading does need more correct answers than Academic for the same band.

No. UK visa applications require IELTS for UKVI, booked as a Secure English Language Test at an approved centre. The exam content is the same as standard IELTS, but the booking route and the report form differ, and an ordinary IELTS booking cannot be converted to a UKVI result afterwards.

Harder than most guides suggest. Across 855 scored practice attempts on this site, only 4.5% of Listening attempts reached the 8.0 that CLB 9 requires, and no Speaking attempt reached 7.0. CLB 7, at 6.0 in each skill, is far more attainable — roughly a quarter of attempts clear it in Listening, Reading and Writing.

Usually not. Immigration requirements are stated per skill, so an overall 7.0 built on a 6.0 in Writing does not satisfy a requirement of 7.0 in each. Both Canada and Australia set your points from your weakest section, which means improving your lowest skill is worth more than improving an already-strong one.
